About Mitchell Oehlman
Registered Psychologist in Brisbane
I’m a registered psychologist working with adults and older adolescents in Spring Hill, Brisbane.
I work with people experiencing anxiety, depression, burnout, relationship difficulties, self-doubt, and periods of uncertainty or change. I’m particularly interested in helping people understand the patterns that shape how they experience themselves, their relationships, and the world around them.
My approach to therapy
My approach is psychodynamic and relational.
Rather than rush towards fixing, we can take time to understand what may be happening beneath the issue that brings you to therapy. Together, we might explore patterns that have developed over time, the ways you relate to other people, and how past experiences continue to influence your present life.
I don't see therapy as simply finding the right advice or fixing a particular symptom. Sometimes understanding comes gradually, through having the space to think about experiences that have previously been difficult to put into words.
I aim to provide a thoughtful, non-judgemental environment where you can be open about what is happening for you. Therapy is collaborative, and I will work with you to develop an understanding of what you need and what you would like to change.
Who I work with
I work with adults and older adolescents experiencing a range of difficulties, including:
Anxiety and depression
Burnout and stress
Relationship difficulties
Self-doubt and low self-esteem
Difficulties with identity or direction
Life transitions and periods of uncertainty
Creative and professional difficulties
Recovery and integration after experiences of altered states including psychosis and/or drug experiences.
I also have a particular interest in working with people whose lives involve creativity, complex work, or a high degree of emotional and intellectual engagement.
Qualifications
I completed a Bachelor of Psychological Science with First Class Honours at Griffith University, where I was awarded the University Medal.
I subsequently completed a Master of Clinical Psychology at Griffith University, developing further training in psychological assessment and clinical practice.
Since completing my postgraduate training, I have undertaken further training in psychodynamic therapy, with a particular focus on developing a deeper understanding of the therapeutic relationship and the ways that unconscious patterns can influence how we experience ourselves and others.
I am a registered psychologist and work within the professional and ethical standards of the psychology profession.
A little more about my perspective
I'm interested in the ways people make sense of their experiences, and in what happens when something doesn't yet make sense.
Sometimes we know exactly what is troubling us. At other times, we simply know that something isn't quite right. Therapy can provide a space to stay with that uncertainty long enough for a clearer understanding to emerge.
My role isn't to tell you who you are or what you should do. It's to think alongside you, and to help you develop a deeper understanding of yourself and the possibilities available to you.
Getting started
Choosing a psychologist can feel like a significant decision. You may have questions about whether therapy is right for you, or whether we would be a good fit.
